A Mission Beyond Help

Suggested order of lessons

This unit contains 4 labs. You should complete the Getting Started lesson in Headquarters to unlock every lab. We recommend you complete the lessons in this order: Skeletal → Nutrition → Muscular → Cardio. Within each lab, you should complete the lessons in numerical order.

How to Plan your Mission

To give you more information about your mission, you will receive reports on the risks of spaceflight or R.O.S. Reports from Mission Control (see below).

These reports will give you leads on how to best prepare a crew for this mission.

At the end of each lesson in this unit you will get a chance to apply what you’ve learned to develop your plan for a Mission to Mars. For example, you may be prompted to make adjustments to the crew’s diet and exercise plan and think about which spacecraft will be best for your journey based on what you learned in that lesson.

To do this, you will use the My Mission app in Beagle. To access this app, select the Beagle icon in the top, right corner of your screen and then press My Mission.

Select a crew with adequate experience, a diverse set of roles, and a suitable medical history.

To do this, visit the Crew tab in your Beagle App Library. Click the Beagle icon in the upper right corner of your screen and select My Mission to get started.

Consider these traits when selecting a team of astronauts:

  • Four crew members are needed. Each should have a unique role on the mission.
  • Each member would need at least a bachelor’s degree and 1000 hours of flight experience
  • Members are free from serious allergies or medical conditions such as a history of cancer, kidney stones, heart conditions.
  • Members have a cooperative personality and are not afraid of challenges

How to select a spaceship

In the lesson Unseen Danger: Radiation, you will learn about the threat of radiation in outer space and what a spaceship must be equipped with to safely carry a crew. At the end of the lesson you will need to select a spaceship with features ensuring your crew’s safety.

How to set your crew’s diet plan

To set up a crew member’s diet plan you will need to click SET in the blue NUTRITION box to the right of your crew member’s name. Then click Create a new meal plan to see meal options.

You will drag a meal plan from the top right corner to one of the days of the week. You will see the averages populate in the DAILY AVG. box to the right of the box for Sunday. It is your goal to make sure that the crews minimum dietary requirements are being met through setting up their weekly meals.

To switch to another team member just click on one of the circles next to the word Crew in the red MISSION DESIGN PLAN tab.

How to set your crew’s exercise plan

To set up a crew members exercise plan you will need to click SET in the blue EXERCISE box to the right of your crew member’s name. Then click Create a new exercise plan to see options.

You will drag an exercise plan from the top right corner to one of the days of the week. You will see the averages populate in the DAILY AVG. box to the right of the box for Sunday. It is your goal to make sure that the crews minimum exercise requirements are being met through setting up their weekly exercise plans.

To switch to another team member just click on one of the circles next to the word Crew in the red MISSION DESIGN PLAN tab.

How to change your crew’s diet and exercise plan

To ensure that each member is getting enough calcium, modify your crew’s diet. Click the Beagle icon in the upper right corner of your screen and select My Mission to get started. After choosing your astronauts, you can click on their profile to modify their meal plan.

Use the CHANGE button on each astronaut’s health tracker page to copy existing plans from other astronauts so you don’t have to recreate the same meal or exercise plan from scratch.

Troubleshooting

Why is my crew dying?

If you notice that your crew’s health is declining, go back and make sure that you have provided them with ideal diet and exercise plans. You can revisit the lesson slides to review what constitutes a healthy diet and exercise regimen. If your mission failed to reach Mars and you need to change your Crew exercise and meal plans, you'll have to ABORT your mission in order to reset the simulation. You can relaunch as many times as you like.

Why am I getting a low score in my simulation?

If you are receiving a low score after launching the simulation it may be because there was a problem during your crew’s flight. Your crew faces many hazards when in space, from weakening bones to solar storms. Keep an eye on the feedback you get from the program. This will tell you if you need to adjust someone’s diet plan or change the type of spaceship you are using. Feedback is your friend!

If you have adjusted your Mission Plan (crew members, diet plans, exercise plans, and ship choice) and launch the simulation but receive an unusually low score, it may be because your browser has cached the information from a previous simulation. To resolve this, make sure to clear your cached image files as well as cookies and other site and plugin data. Then quit Chrome completely and log in again from the original link in your LMS or email. Click here for instructions on how to clear cache and cookies.

Why can’t I see the exercise plan section?

If you are unable to see the exercise section it’s likely that you are zoomed in too far in the screen. If your screen looks similar to the image below you will need to manually zoom out.

For instructions on how to zoom out in your browser click here.

Scoring

The total number of points you can earn for Unit 8: A Mission Beyond is 954. For a lesson by lesson breakdown see the table below:

The Launchpad Simulation

You can launch the simulation as many times as you want. Between launches you can re-adjust all of the variables as needed.

Before you launch your crew to Mars open the My Mission app to make sure you have the following:

  • A spacecraft
  • A full crew
  • Crew members, each with 7 meal plans
  • Crew members, each with 7 exercise plans

Remember, if you have not yet taken all the lessons in this unit, you may not be prepared for the launch simulation.

You will not be able to change your crew, spaceship or meal plan once you launch, so make sure you make any adjustments before you launch. However, if you are unsatisfied with the results of your launch you can restart the lesson and adjust your plan to try and improve your result.
